Discover the Harrower Summer Opera Workshop, a unique program with a relaxed, yet professional atmosphere — located in the heart of Atlanta, the hub of southern culture and hospitality.

Celebrating its 27th anniversary this summer, the Workshop is a three-week program including daily acting and movement classes, private coaching, instruction in stage makeup and stage combat, seminars and masterclasses with international artists, and public presentations of staged and costumed operatic scenes. Internationally acclaimed opera stars Jane Bunnell, mezzo-soprano and Mark Embree, bass-baritone will be this summer’s artists-in-residence, leading masterclasses for participants

The remarkable faculty at Harrower includes artistic director Carroll Freeman, nationally recognized teacher, director and singer, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, New York City Opera, Knoxville Opera, Mississippi Opera; Reed Woodhouse of The Juilliard School, New England Conservatory and Chautauqua Opera; Copeland Woodruff of the University of Memphis, Oberlin Conservatory and New York City Opera and W. Dwight Coleman, former artistic director of the workshop, and current Harrower general director and director of the Georgia State School of Music.

Repertoire: Three operatic arias, one of which must be in English.

A non-refundable fee of $50.00 must accompany each application (if accepted, this fee will apply to tuition). Make check payable to Georgia State University.

Audition by Videotape/DVD:
Out-of-town applications may audition by videotape or DVD. The videotape or DVD must be received by February 5, 2010, and contain the same repertoire as the live auditions.

  • Richard Clement, an alumnus of the Georgia State University School of Music known worldwide for his work as a performer of opera and oratorio

TWO WAYS TO PARTICIPATE

  1. Participants wishing to perform may enroll in the opera workshop after successfully completing the audition requirements. The fee for performing participants is $900.

  2. Participants not wishing to perform but interested in techniques of coaching, stage direction, acting or music education may enroll. The fee for non-performing participants is $500.

  3. A non-refundable fee of $50.00 must accompany each application (if accepted this fee will apply to tuition). Make check payable to Georgia State University.

DIRECTING INTERNSHIP AVAILABLE

This internship is designed for a collegiate voice teacher who directs opera or an aspiring stage director. The selected intern receives an award of full tuition. Please apply through the regular application.

The intern will participate in the workshop, assist the directors and coaches, and will have possible directing responsibilities supervised by workshop staff.
